Getting Started: Undergraduate Substantive Edits
If you're concerned about the way your argument is presented, then you probably need Substantive Edits.
A substantive edit refers to the rhetorical situation of your essay, which includes your purpose, your audience, your genre/media, and your voice and style.
Substantive edits do not take into account grammar, punctuation, typos, word choice, spelling, formatting, or related issues. If you order a Level 3 reading of your paper, it will not include copy editing or proofreading.
At this level, we will help you clarify your purpose with a well-developed thesis statement, target the appropriate audience with appeals to logos/ethos/pathos, identify and remove logical fallacies, help you present your information in the appropriate genre, and suggest ways to strengthen your voice and create an appropriate tone.
